August 15 Field Day: Setting Up for Success with Cover Crops

Where: LongView Farms, 20965 650th Ave., Nevada, IA 50201
When: 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM; registration beginning at 8:00 AM
Sponsors: Prairie Rivers of Iowa, Iowa Seed Corn Cover Crop Initiative, Iowa Corn, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS).

This field day will emphasize the importance and practices of cover crops. Local farmers, operators and seed corn growers will share their experiences with cover crops and give advice. There will be an open Q & A to ask questions and have experienced workers answer them for you.

With time permitting, after lunch there may be a possible Hagie interseeding demonstration in standing seed corn.

June 27 Field Day: Conservation Practices

Where: Key Cooperative, Nevada Plot (22703 600th Ave., Nevada)
When: 4:00 to 7:00 PM; registration beginning at 3:30 PM
Sponsors: Prairie Rivers of Iowa, Key Cooperative, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Development, Story County Conservation

The focus of this field day will be buffer strips and strip-till conservation practices. Presentations will cover water quality protection efforts in Iowa, strip-till equipment and adoption, and buffer strip installation for water quality improvement.

Key Cooperative agronomist Chris McIlrath will be discussing tillage. Kelly Eels, Sales Manager and leader on the Sustain Team, will be on hand to discuss that program. Other speakers include:

  • Kayla Bergman, Watershed Coordinator of Prairie Rivers of Iowa.
  • Mike Cox, Director of Story County Conservation.
  • Dana Holland, District Conservationist with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS).

June 13 Field Day: Cover Crops and Soil Health

Where: Larry Haren Farm, 1387 Kendall Young Road, Webster City
When: 5:00 to 7:00 PM; registration beginning at 4:30 PM
Co-sponsors: Prairie Rivers of Iowa, Iowa Learning Farms, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Hamilton County Conservation

This field day will emphasize cover crop utilization and other soil health practices. Participants will get to view the many practices installed on Haren’s farm.

Rick Cruse, Professor of Agronomy at Iowa State University, will discuss how these practices can protect soil health. Then, Karen Wilke, of the Nature Conservancy, will speak with attendees about oxbow restoration. Lastly, Liz Juchems of Iowa Learning Farms and Kayla Bergman of Prairie Rivers of Iowa will also be on hand to present on these topics.
